INTRODUCTION
The mission of the Cumberland County Sheriffs Office is to protect the life and property of individuals in the county while maintaining traditional sheriff’s services and providing primary and support services upon request. The ability to complete this mission relies on mutual respect and responsibility as shared by the office, county and municipal agencies, citizens it serves and the members it employs. It is of paramount importance that the members of this office secure the confidence, respect and approval of the public and that quest begins with the recruitment of personnel. A professional responsibility no less grave than that of other administrators of the law is imposed upon members and employees of this office. Professionalization of law enforcement is gaining general recognition, but it can win universal acclaim and permanent status only if the actions of the profession embody the highest attributes of every other profession. The position of law enforcement has evolved over the years into a highly respected profession with well-educated and skillfully trained individuals included in its ranks. With the constantly growing dangers, duties and liabilities instilled upon every law enforcement officer today comes the increase in salaries, benefits and training opportunities. The following information outlines the career opportunities to be found within the Cumberland County Sheriffs Office.

SALARY
Salary would be determined by the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.

BENEFITS
Each full-time sworn member of the Cumberland County Sheriffs Office shall receive full benefits in accordance with the present contract, which shall include a major medical health plan, a prescription medication plan, and group life insurance as part of the Police and Fire Retirement System or Public Employee's Retirement System. In addition to these advantages, each newly appointed Sheriffs Officer is currently entitled to twelve vacation days, twelve days for sickness and three days personal leave. Each Sheriffs Officer shall also be granted pay for thirteen holidays during which the County is closed.

TRAINING
Every newly appointed Sheriffs Officer shall have their tuition and salary paid for by the Sheriffs Office while they attend the Police Training Commission accredited police academy for the basic police training class. Upon graduating from the class and completion of a supervised Field Training Program, each new officer shall be assigned to a specific division within the Sheriffs Office, which consists of Judicial Division, Enforcement Division and Service Division.

FEDERAL AND STATE GUIDELINES
Presently there are no controlling federal or state statutes restricting the recruitment and selection of sworn personnel except for the New Jersey Civil Service Commission requirements outlined below. We are seeking educated, professional and well disciplined individuals of all races, genders and religions.

CHARACTERISTICS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT
To apply for employment with the Cumberland County Sheriff s Office, an individual must fulfill the following:

  • Successfully complete the civil service entry exam conducted by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission.
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be a resident of the State of New Jersey and the County of Cumberland.
  • Possess a high school diploma or be in possession of an approved High School Equivalency Certificate.
  • Be at least eighteen years of age.
  • Pass a thorough background investigation, psychological examination, and medical examination to include drug screening.
  • Successfully complete a Basic Police Course at a selected Police Training Academy.
    (This requirement must be satisfied within eighteen months of initial appointment.)

If an individual does not possess the above qualifications or the characteristics to attain the above attributes, they shall not be considered for employment with the Cumberland County Sheriff's office.
